We were out and about early again this morning. I decided we’d go for a walk around the lake in Rumney before it rained, which we almost did apart from one very heavy shower when we were halfway there.
The lake was created about 4(?) years ago, and is in the delightful location of being opposite the landfill site, the railway line runs along the otherside of it, and a busy flyover goes across one end. So not really the quietest of places, but despite all this it’s still a nice place to go for a walk.
If you imagine putting the next 4 photos next to eachother, you’ll get a sort of panoramic view.
The lake seems to attract a lot of wildlife. There’s a couple of swans who have been there for a few years now, and always manage to raise a family. They usually start off with six cygnets, but sadly as the weeks go on their number seems to go down to 3 or 4.
I didn’t dare get too close, as they’re almost as big as me. They were doing a lot of preening while we were watching them, so nearly all my pics look like they’re headless.
There’s also a few ducks and lots of coots.
Usually there’s lots of people fishing, so I presume there must be something worth catching in there, but there was no one around today, I guess they must all be in work.
To walk all the way around the lake, you have to cross this bridge.
I really don’t like it. It makes me really unsteady, I think it’s the movement of the water underneath it, and I always have visions of Danny falling off the edge. You’d think with all the Health & Safety madness that’s about, the Council would’ve been made to put a handrail or something along it, although this of course would affect the natural look of it.
We were accompanied most of the way around by an extremely bouncy five year old Boxer dog. I love dogs, but Boxers do look a bit scary, this one though was a big softy. According to the lady who was walking him he loves children, and he refused to leave us alone, even when she put him back on the lead.
Unfortunately when we go to the lake, I’m faced with another one of my pet hates. Dog mess. I seem to spend my days trying to avoid it on pavements, and at places like the lake people seem to think it’s fine for their dogs to mess. What’s so hard about picking it up? If you own a dog you should be responsible enough to pick up after it.
Back across the railway bridge (avoiding all the dog mess) there’s another big field.
You can’t see it in the pic, but along the edge of the field the Council have recently created a path. We quite often just walk through the field if we can’t be bothered to go all the way around the lake, and Danny likes looking out for the trains. We really are so lucky in Rumney to have so many green spaces, lets hope we can hold on to them.
